Sergeant Greg Moore, a 16-year veteran of Coeur d'Alene police department.

An American police officer has died of his wounds after being shot while checking on a suspicious person in the US northwestern state of Idaho.

The incident occurred in Coeur d'Alene city on Tuesday when police sergeant Greg Moore was checking a suspicious person in the neighborhood and the man opened fire on him, police spokeswoman Sgt. Christie Wood said in a statement.

He died of his wounds at Kootenai Health in the city late in the afternoon.

"He was out doing routine random patrols in an area that we have experienced some auto burglaries in. So he was doing what we do. It's just incredibly tragic," Wood said.

The suspect later drove off in the officer’s patrol car on a high-speed while was being chased by officers of a neighboring city.

The officers later arrested a 26-year-old man when a police dog dragged the man from his hiding place under a truck.

The suspect, Jonathan Renfro, was charged with attempted murder, theft of a police vehicle, theft of an officer's gun and being a felon with a gun.

"Our community has been wounded," said Coeur d'Alene Mayor Steve Widmyer. "We have lost a great man."

Another police officer was shot in the head and killed in New York City on Monday.

The 25-year-old officer, Brian Moore, was shot while he was sitting inside an unmarked police car. Moore and his partner, Erik Jansen, were shopping Saturday evening when they started questioning a man they suspected of carrying a gun.
