US Senator Cruz says Iran nuclear deal ‘makes war a certainty’
US Republican presidential hopeful Senator Ted Cruz says President Barack Obama’s efforts to reach a nuclear agreement with Iran would end in a military confrontation.
"This deal makes war a certainty," the senator said on Tuesday about the results of the current nuclear negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 group – the US, Britain, Russia, China, France and Germany.
The contender for president explained how the potential deal would result in war.
"Because what President Obama is doing, if this goes forward, is unraveling the international consensus in favor of sanctions,” the Texas Republican was quoted as saying by the Huffington Post.
“That means the next president who enters the White House in January of 2017 is likely to encounter a world with Iran on the verge of having nuclear weapons where sanctions will have been taken off the table by Barack Obama, because they cannot be placed back with our allies in any reasonable period of time to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, which means in all likelihood the next president will face a binary choice: Either allow Iran to have nuclear weapons or use military force to prevent it,” he added.
"That's the consequence of this Obama-Iran deal," Cruz concluded.
Iran and the P5+1 group reached a framework agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program on April 2 in Switzerland. The two sides are working to finalize a deal by the end of June.
This is while some Republicans have failed to sabotage the deal by trying to force a vote on an amendment to a bill that would require Iran to recognize Israel.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell cut off debate on the bill without consideration of the amendment.
The bill that would allow Congress to review any final agreement with Iran will likely go to the Senate floor on Thursday.
On Tuesday, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Bob Corker announced that he expects an overwhelming vote in favor of the bill.
Last month, President Obama said recognition of Israel cannot be a part of the nuclear agreement, adding that requiring Tehran to recognize Israel is a “fundamental misjudgment.”
