A number of NATO members and Sweden have launched large-scale military drills in Europe amid ongoing tensions with Russia.

The military exercises, which involve thousands of troops, are taking place in Estonia, Lithuania and Norway.

Forces from the United States, Britain, Germany, Latvia, Poland and Sweden are participating in the exercises, which are codenamed Dynamic Mongoose.

The war games, which were launched on Monday and will last for two weeks, also include anti-submarine and cyber security exercises in the North Sea.

The drills involve simulated sub hunts utilizing surface vessels, aircraft and a variety of radar and sonar technologies.

The maneuvers are taking place as Russia is preparing for World War Two Victory Day parades on May 9.

Many Western leaders will be absent at the ceremonies because of the tensions over the Ukrainian crisis, in which they say Russia has a hand. Moscow denies the accusation.

NATO and Russia have been flexing their military muscles in the region, with the Ukraine situation seen as a serious bone of contention.

The two mainly Russian-speaking regions of Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraine have been hit by deadly clashes between pro-Russia forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations in April last year to crush pro-Russia protests there.
