Tunisia eyes car imports from Iran
Tunisian ambassador to Tehran says his country plans to import cars from Iran.
“Tunisia imports 50,000 cars every year and plans to import cars from Iran. We have already reviewed Iranian cars and signed a technical agreement with Iran in this regard,” the Tasnim News Agency quoted Qazi bin Salih as saying.
The automobile industry is seen as Iran’s biggest non-oil sector. It accounts for nearly 10 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Latest data shows that Iran ranks 18th on the list of the world’s top auto manufacturers.
The Tunisian official made the comments in a meeting with the director of the Trade Promotion Organization of Iran in Tehran.
He also said Iran is the only country with which Tunisia has set up joint economic trade commission, emphasizing that trade ties between the two countries will improve in near future.
The Tunisian ambassador also said Tunisian banks are interested in setting up brokerage relations with Iranian banks to facilitate trade cooperation.
A Tunisian trade delegation will travel to Iran later this year to discuss the issue, he added.
The director of the Trade Promotion Organization of Iran said Tehran seeks to increase trade volume with different countries.
The two sides also discussed ways of speeding up the implementation of a preferential trade agreement signed between Tehran and Tunis.
