Spanish activists stage anti-NATO march in Madrid

Spanish protesters rally against NATO and the bloc’s bases in the country during a march from Madrid to the Torrejón Air Base on April 25, 2015.

Spaniards have staged an 18-kilometer anti-NATO march to protest against the Western military alliance’s bases in the country.

A large group of protesters joined the rally organized by the Global Platform against Wars on Saturday marching from the outskirt of the capital Madrid on the Torrejón Air Base.

The facility serves as the headquarters of one of two joint air operation centers of NATO.

The demonstrators voiced their anger at the construction of a 10,000-square meter (110,000-square feet) bunker at the base.

Many of the protesters were carrying Spanish Republican and Soviet flags and chanted, “Imperialism Is Terrorism,” “No to NATO” and “Bases out!”

The participants also demanded the reduction of Spain’s military expenditure and the liquidation of NATO military bases in the county.

“Spain puts in money, soldiers and operation bases which are decided by other countries and that have nothing to do with our interests,” said Angeles Maestro, a spokesman for the Global Platform against Wars.

Another protester Angeles Diaz said at the march that since 1989, nearly 140,000 Spanish soldiers had been involved in international military campaigns across the globe.

Spain became a member of NATO in 1982. The country currently maintains two military bases, with the US having permanent presence in both – the Moron Air Base outside the southern city of Seville and the Naval Station Rota on the Spanish southwestern coast.
