At least one Ukrainian soldier has been killed and two others have been wounded in a shelling in the country's southeast.

A military spokesman said the serviceman was killed on Saturday in Shyrokyne, a strategic village on the outskirts of the port city of Mariupol.

Dmytro Gorbunov claimed that the clash broke out when pro-Russians opened fire on the government's National Guard forces.

The latest fatality comes amid a fragile deal between the Kiev government and pro-Russians, which was signed in February, to end the tension in the east.

The truce, brokered in the Belarus city of Minsk, was reached after marathon talks between the leaders of France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine. It came into force on February 15.

Both Ukraine and pro-Russians regularly accuse each other of breaching the agreement.

The two mainly Russian-speaking regions of Donetsk and Lugansk in eastern Ukraine have been hit by deadly clashes between pro-Russia forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations in April last year to crush pro-Russia protests there.

According to the UN, more than 6,000 people have been killed since the beginning of the conflict in the region a year ago.
