US accusations against Russia meant to hide activities in Ukraine: Activist

Kevin Zeese says the US is accusing Russia of military buildup along its border with Ukraine in an attempt to divert attention from its activities in Eastern Europe.

The United States is accusing Russia of military buildup along its border with Ukraine in an attempt to divert attention from its activities in Eastern Europe, an American political commentator and activist says.

“The US never offers any proof and makes these claims. We do know what’s happening is that the United States is sending military advisers and trainers to Ukraine. This is open, not a secret,” said Kevin Zeese, executive director of Voters for Peace, one of the leading peace movements in the US.

“So the US is certainly doing its part to escalate on the Kiev side of Ukraine. And I think this claim about Russia sending troops [is meant] to put attention on Russia rather than what’s the US is doing,” he told Press TV on Thursday.

Zeese made the remarks while commenting on recent accusations made by the United States against Russia.

The US State Department alleges that Russia has deployed more air defense systems in eastern Ukraine in breach of a ceasefire deal.

Ties between Washington and Moscow deteriorated after pro-Western forces ousted Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014.

Western governments accuse Russia of destabilizing Ukraine by supporting pro-Russian forces in the eastern regions.

Russia, however, says Washington is responsible for the escalating tensions in Ukraine by sending arms in support of the Ukrainian army.

Zeese said, “If the United States had not intervened with a coup, supporting a coup, we would not have this civil war now between east and west Ukraine.”

“The United States is causing chaos on the Russian border and to try to pull Russia into a conflict that Russia has been trying to avoid,” he added.

“If you look at what’s the facts are, the United States is causing chaos and Russia is trying to stop the chaos, and Ukraine is just adding to the escalation,” he reiterated.

In an interview with CNN earlier in February, US President Barack Obama admitted that Washington brokered a power transition deal in Ukraine.

“We had brokered a deal to transition power in Ukraine” since Russian President Vladimir Putin “made this decision around Crimea and Ukraine.”

The Crimean people voted in a referendum to join Russia after rejecting the Western-backed government. The move triggered an international controversy after the new government’s foreign sponsors accused Russia of annexing the peninsula through military force.
