French police foils 5 terror attacks: Premier

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls says police have foiled at least five terror attacks since the country witnessed a number of deadly attacks earlier this year.

The French premier made the remarks during an interview with radio station France, on Thursday.

“Numerous attacks had already been foiled; five if you take into account the attack which happily did not take place at Villejuif,” Valls said.

A Franco-Algerian youth named Sid Ahmed Ghlam is currently being investigated by police for being involved in an alleged plot to attack a church near the capital, Paris, on Sunday. Authorities say they have found evidence suggesting he planned to carry out one or more attacks.

A day earlier, police said they had arrested the 24-year-old suspect for the recent plot. He is also suspected of the murder of a 32-year-old woman days earlier.

It was not made clear whether the remaining four attacks were linked to the plot Villejuif.

The French premier added that the threat “had never been so high. We have never had to face this kind of terrorism in our history.”

The development comes as reports indicate that hundreds of French nationals have in recent months moved to Syria to join Takfiri ISIL militants operating in the country.

In early January, terror attacks, said to have been fueled by the French magazine Charlie Hebdo’s cartoons of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), left nearly 20 people dead in Paris, leaving the country on high alert.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), an extremist Yemen-based group, later claimed responsibility for the deadly attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices.

However, attacks on Muslims in France have also increased in recent months.
