Congress 'will increase US military budget': Michael Maloof

A former Pentagon official believes that the US military budget will be increased soon.

There is a mounting pressure on American lawmakers to increase the US military budget, says former Pentagon official Michael Maloof.

“There are more and more requests coming in for major orders to our defense contractors, basically from the Saudi-led coalition countries that are bombing in Yemen right now, but also against Syria and against the ISIS (ISIL) and inevitably against Iran,” Maloof warned on Sunday.

His reaction comes after hawkish US senators pushed for legislation that removes the limit on the Pentagon budget.

Maloof went on to say that he believes there would be more pressure from lawmakers to increase the defense budget and the US Congress will be forced to do that due to what he called “growing concerns.”

He also pointed out in his interview with Press TV that many countries in Europe who are part of the Western alliance are not going to be bearing burden of increased military spending.

“Other concerns that are arising are in Europe, Ukraine. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) countries are unable to fulfill their NATO commitments and that puts a greater burden on the United States,” he said.

The US military has come under scrutiny by the public for mishandling trillions of taxpayer dollars.

Four years ago, Congress limited the spending of the Pentagon triggering massive spending cuts across every major aspect of America’s military known as the sequester.

However, many military officials are now calling for a Pentagon budget without any caps, even Defense Secretary Ashton Carter.

In recent years, the US military has come under scrutiny by the public for mishandling trillions of US taxpayer dollars and in some cases that money is never accounted for.

An investigation last year revealed that the US Department of Defense has failed to account for $8.5 trillion dollars of taxpayer money that Congress has allocated toward the Pentagon since 1996, according to a report.

The report by Reuters found that military agencies failed to supply a clear monthly account of the money they spent.
