Sen. Cruz says Iran nuclear deal ‘historic mistake’

Senator Ted Cruz says the finalization of any deal with Iran “is a historic mistake.”

Republican Senator Ted Cruz has said that the finalization of any deal with Iran over its nuclear program would be the worst diplomatic mistake of all time.

“It is a historic mistake,” Cruz said on Saturday during a GOP event in New Hampshire.

Cruz, a 2016 GOP presidential hopeful, argued that even a framework agreement with Iran would put global safety at risk. “The next 20 months are going to be a dangerous time.”

He also said that “the threat of a nuclear Iran is the single greatest threat to America’s national security.”

Sen. Cruz joined two other GOP presidential hopefuls– GOP Sens. Rand Paul (Ky.) and Marco Rubio (Fla.) – in signing a letter sent to Iran’s leadership last month. The letter was signed by 47 GOP senators who promised that Congress would avoid any nuclear agreement that threatened America’s security.

Iran and P5+1 group of countries - the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany - reached a mutual understanding on Tehran’s nuclear program on April 2 in Switzerland. The two sides are expected to start drafting a final deal which they seek to sign by the end of June.

Obama said Friday that he would sign a bill allowing Congress to review a final nuclear agreement with Iran because it would not undermine negotiations.

Speaking at a news conference, he said that legislation drafted by Senators Bob Corker and Ben Cardin is a “reasonable compromise” that would not impede negotiators from reaching a final deal with Iran by July 1.

Right-wing elements in the Republican Party along with Israel and some of their allies accuse Iran of pursuing military objectives in its civilian nuclear program.

Iran rejects the allegation, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
