The ISIL terrorist group has claimed responsibility for a recent bomb attack near the US consulate in the capital of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, Erbil, which reportedly left four people dead.

The Takfiri group posted an online announcement saying, “Security detachments were able to... detonate a car bomb left at the American consulate building in the city that led to the killing and wounding of many of them.”

The US State Department has said no consular employees were among the casualties in the Friday attack.

Local sources said at least four people were killed in the attack and a number of others were wounded.

Local television aired footage of a burning vehicle sending thick black smoke into the sky at the entrance of the building following the incident.

The city of Erbil is the largest city and the capital of the Kurdistan Region. It is located in the center of the semi-autonomous region and has a population of half a million as recorded in 2013.

The last major attack in Erbil was carried out last November, when several people died in a bomb explosion near the provincial government headquarters.

The recent ISIL attack comes as the Iraqi army, backed by Kurdish, Shia and Sunni fighters are fighting to drive the ISIL terrorists out of many areas occupied by the militants.
