Sexual abuse widespread on Paris trains: Survey
A new survey shows that a shocking number of women have been subjected to sexually-motivated abuse at some point in their lives on trains and the metro in the French capital city of Paris.
The findings were released on Friday in the poll, which was carried out by the High Council for Equality between Women and Men, involving 600 women from Seine-Saint-Denis and Essonne, the outer suburbs of Paris, The Local news website reported.
According to the survey, 100 percent of the women polled had experienced at least some form of gender-based sexual harassment on public transport.
Half of those questioned also said they had experienced some sort of harassment before the age of 18.
The council defined gender harassment as “the imposition of any kind of words or behavior that are intended to create a situation that is intimidating, humiliating, degrading, or offensive.”
France’s Health Minister Marisol Touraine reacted to the survey’s findings, pledging that the government would “take action” over the issue in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Margaux Collet, the spokeswoman for the group Osez le Féminisme, called on the French administration to tackle sexual abuse on public transport, warning that the problem “has basically been trivialized.”
“What we need now is a real response from the government. The public are demanding it,” she said.
The remarks come in the wake of a government scandal surrounding pedophile teachers in France.
The scandal broke recently after reports emerged on how numerous teachers were employed at schools across France despite having previous convictions for pedophilia.
France is also among the countries hit by sex abuse scandals involving the Roman Catholic Church.
