Ban: UN will do its best to help implement final Iran nuclear deal
The UN says it will do its best to help implement a potential nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries once negotiations are finalized by the end of June.
“Once a comprehensive agreement is finalized by the end of June, the United Nations will do its best to help implementation process, including stringent monitoring and verification by the International Atomic Energy Agency,” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in an address to the audience in the National Press Club in Washington on Thursday.
He commended a mutual understanding reached between Iran and the six countries in Lausanne, Switzerland, earlier this month and said the two sides agreed on the provisions of a future accord that were aimed at scaling down Tehran’s nuclear program and removing sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia – plus Germany reached a mutual understanding in Lausanne on April 2, following eight days of marathon talks.
According to the statement, no Iranian nuclear facility will be shut down while all political and economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic will be terminated.
The European Union said on Thursday that political directors from Iran and the P5+1 will meet in Vienna, Austria, on April 22-23 to start drafting a permanent accord based on the mutual understanding of Lausanne.
The EU statement said the two negotiating sides “will continue work towards a comprehensive solution to the Iranian nuclear issue based on the key understandings reached in Switzerland on April 2.”
The mechanism for lifting the sanctions imposed on Tehran will be a major stumbling block in the new round of talks.
The Western governments, headed by the Washington, say removal of bans will be conducted in a step-by-step manner. Tehran says all sanctions should be lifted at the same time as a final deal goes into effect.
