S-300 delivery to Iran poses no threat to regional states: Russia envoy

Russian Ambassador to Iran Levan Dzhagaryan

The Russian ambassador to Iran has rejected claims that Moscow’s delivery of a highly-advanced defense system to Tehran could pose threats to regional states.

Levan Dzhagaryan said Thursday that Russia’s decision to lift a ban on delivering S-300 air defense systems to Iran will pose no threat to the Middle East countries as well as other states neighboring Iran.

The Russian envoy expressed hope that the decision could benefit both Russia and Iran, adding that the two sides have enhanced their relations to a satisfactory level.

Dzhagaryan, who was speaking to Iran’s state television, said that Tehran and Moscow have common ground on regional issues, namely on Iraq, Yemen and the Caspian Sea.

He also said that over the past months, diplomatic visits between Tehran and Moscow have significantly increased, which, according to him, shows the satisfactory state of relations between the two countries, especially on the political front.

The Russian official announced that a deputy chief of Russia’s state nuclear energy organization, known as Rosatom, is due to visit Tehran in the coming days.

On April 13, 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a presidential decree, paving the way for the long-overdue delivery of the S-300 missile shield systems to Iran.

The move, which hugely irked the Western governments and their regional allies, is viewed as a milestone in Tehran-Moscow’s already growing relations.

Israel was one of those who immediately expressed concern over Putin’s decision, with Strategic Affairs Minister Yuval Steinitz saying Monday that the move could help Iran advance in the Middle East. US State Department spokesperson Marie Harf also said on the same day that his country opposes Russia’s decision as it would help what she claimed to be Iran’s destabilizing role the Middle East.

Iran and Russia have reportedly agreed to examine all technical issues related to the S-300 air defense missile system in the coming months, so that it could be delivered to Tehran by the end of the current year.
