Thousands of Yemeni refugees fleeing the ongoing Saudi airstrikes are seeking shelter in the Horn of Africa.

People displaced by the Yemeni conflict are crossing the Gulf of Aden on boats to reach neighboring African countries.

Nearly 350 Yemeni refugees arrived at a temporary refugee camp of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in Obock, Djibouti on Thursday.

The camp is a temporary transit point for the refugees who will soon be transferred to newly erected camps in northern Djibouti, which is less than 30km from Yemen.

Djibouti has so far received more than 4,200 migrants from the war-torn impoverished Arab country, according to the Yemeni project manager for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Chissey Mueller.

Meanwhile, the UNHCR says that there has been some movement of people fleeing Yemen to Somalia as well.

Yemen has been targeted by Saudi air raids since March 26 in a campaign aimed at restoring power to fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

Saudi Arabia’s military aggression against the impoverished Arab country, which is being carried out without a United Nations mandate, has claimed the lives of almost 2,600 people, including many women and children, so far.

The humanitarian situation in Yemen is rapidly deteriorating as Yemenis are facing a shortage of essential food stuffs, water, fuel and vital drugs.

International humanitarian agencies expect tens of thousands more to flee Yemen in the coming months amid the worsening humanitarian situation.
