Domestic consensus will occur on Iran deal within P5+1 states: EU

The European Union’s foreign policy chief says she is “confident” that the countries involved in negotiations with Iran over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program will manage to create domestic political consensus over a possible deal between the negotiating sides.

Asked about a recent draft bill in the US Senate that would demand congressional review of a possible comprehensive deal between Iran and the P5+1, Mogherini said on Thursday the political conditions will be created within “the key countries that are part of the negotiations… to allow a political consensus about this agreement.”

“I am confident that this would be the case both in the United States and in other countries,” she said.

On Tuesday, the US Senate’s Committee on Foreign Relations passed a draft bill that would give Congress the power to review a possible final nuclear agreement between the P5+1 and Iran.

While US President Barack Obama had previously pledged to veto the bill if it was voted through the Congress, the US administration reached a compromise with the drafters of the bill to put in amendments, and withdrew the veto threat in return.

The White House says Obama would now sign the proposed compromise bill if it is voted on in the Congress.

Iran and the P5+1 group – the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany – have been negotiating to reach a final agreement over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program. The two sides issued a joint statement outlining the parameters of a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) over Tehran’s nuclear program in Switzerland on April 2.

The EU announced Thursday that political directors from Iran and the P5+1 member states will meet in the Austrian capital of Vienna on April 22-23 to start drafting the comprehensive nuclear accord ahead of a self-designated July 1 deadline.
