No end to ‘Obama’s war’ in Ukraine
There seems to be no end in sight to the war in Ukraine with the US even sending more troops to the country on the “pretext” of training the country’s forces, an analyst says.
Efforts to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine’s Donbass region have “absolutely failed” despite a number of agreements, in which all sides vowed to hold a ceasefire “but the fighting never stopped”, Stephen Lendman, a Chicago-based author and radio host, told Press TV in a Tuesday phone interview.
He was referring to peace efforts between the warring sides including the Minsk Protocol signed in September 2014 as well as Minsk II inked in February this year, despite which “America is deploying its forces, in increasing numbers, to eastern Europe and conducting… provocative exercises close to Russia’s border”.
On Monday, US paratroopers arrived in Ukraine for the so-called Operation Fearless Guardian, a six-month plan to train the Ukrainian national guard forces.
Such moves are “enraging Moscow legitimately”, Lendman noted.
Captian P.J. Hartman, a US battalion transportation planner with the 173rd said in an Army news release that the “The equipment on the convoy consists primarily of logistics vehicles to support and enable the training effort in Ukraine. This equipment will provide maintenance support as well as troop and general cargo transport to and from training areas.”
The move came as most of the people in Donbass only seek “a democratic system of government, not the fascist government that’s running Ukraine now”, according to Lendman.
Since the start of Kiev’s military operation to crack down on pro-Russia protesters in eastern Ukraine last year, over 6,100 people have died while nearly 15,500 have been injured, according to the UN.
Both sides of the conflict have, on numerous occasions, accused one another of breaking the truce.
“The war goes on without end. It’s Obama’s war. He planned it; he initiated it; he continues it, and it’s beginning to escalate,” Lendman said.
