ISIL losing ground in Yarmouk: Palestinian sources
ISIL militants have lost ground at the Palestinian Yarmouk refugee camp in Syria, where different Palestinian factions have joined the fight against the Takfiri terrorists operating there.
Palestinian officials and residents said on Tuesday that ISIL militants have retreated from most of the areas they had captured at the camp in the Syrian capital, Damascus, over the past two weeks.
The head of the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front, Khaled Abdel Majid, said the terrorists were mostly confined to the camp’s southwest, while Palestinians were in control of most of the site’s eastern and northern areas.
“There are intermittent but ongoing clashes between Palestinian factions” and the ISIL extremists, who stormed Yarmouk on April 1, said Abdel Majid.
A Palestinian resident in Yarmouk also said they had not seen any ISIL terrorists over the past three days.
Meanwhile, a Syrian security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, also said the Palestinian factions “had made progress and were able to recapture key points.”
According to the United Nations, some 18,000 Palestinians, including 3,500 children, are caught in the fighting.
The camp was once home to 160,000 Syrians and Palestinians. However, it has turned into a ghost town as a result of the violent attacks by anti-government militants over the past four years of tumult in Syria.
Yarmouk, which is one of the six Palestinian refugee camps in Syria, is of significance as it hosts the headquarters of the main Palestinian factions.
Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 215,000 people, according to reports.
