Catholic leader urges fight against ISIL

Cardinal Nichols, head of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales

The head of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, has urged the forced removal of ISIL as the only way for peace.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols spoke passionately for the need to push back ISIL after visiting Iraq and being moved by what he saw. He praised the Chaldean community for offering support and assistance to the thousands of people fleeing their homes due to the brutality of ISIL.

Addressing the Chaldean community in Erbil, he said, “We know that so much more needs to be done so that you can return to your homes and lands. We pray for your perseverance and patience in these very difficult circumstances.”

The Cardinal also spoke angrily about the desecration and vandalization of the cathedral in Mosul and called for more aid to be sent to those suffering in the hands of ISIL.

He also said “there is no way ISIL is going to walk away without being forced to do so…the ISIL threat has got to be pushed back territorially."

Cardinal Nichols expressed “solidarity” with the people that have been traumatized in Iraq’s Kurdish capital of Erbil. He spoke proudly of how the Christian communities have helped each other in recent times and that they were “desperate” to go home.

However, he did warn that even if ISIL did retreat and even if the Christians were able to return home, the terrorist group would still cause problems. He said "We know IS - they are just destroyers - they would leave villages not only wrecked but booby-trapped".

Iraq’s Kurdish capital of Erbil has seen a huge influx of Christians as they desperately flee ISIL. They passionately want to go home but the Cardinal is advocating patience and solidarity whilst also saying that ISIL should be forced back to help the peace process heal in the region.
