Iran, Iraq parliament speakers discuss Mideast developments

The Iranian parliament (Majlis) speaker and his Iraqi counterpart have discussed challenges threatening the security and stability of the Middle East and ways of addressing them.

In a telephone conversation on Monday, Ali Larijani and Salim al-Jabouri exchanged views on the latest developments in the region.

Larijani also reportedly proposed a trilateral meeting with his Iraqi and Turkish counterparts to discuss ways to stop the bloodshed in the region and find solutions to crises in the Middle East through mutual understanding and dialog.

The proposal by the senior Iranian official comes as Yemen has been under Saudi airstrikes since March 26, in a campaign aimed at restoring power to the fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

Saudi Arabia’s military aggression against Yemen, which is being carried out without a United Nations mandate, has so far claimed the lives of almost 2,600 people.

This comes as Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far killed over 215,000 people, according to reports.

The battles against ISIL terrorists is also underway in Iraq, where the army, backed by volunteer forces, has engaged in joint operations to drive militants out of the areas under their control.
