Afghan officials say they have recovered the dead bodies of five aid workers, who had been abducted more than a month ago by unidentified gunmen in the country’s central province of Uruzgan.

Dost Mohammad Nayab, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said the corpses were found on Friday, noting that the victims were members of local staff working for Britain-based Save the Children – an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that promotes children's rights, provides relief and helps support children in developing countries.

Nayab further noted that the five were abducted around 40 days ago, and that the government had refused their captors' demands for a prisoner exchange.

Meanwhile, abductors of the 29 Shia Muslims kidnapped in the southern province of Zabul in late February have threatened to kill their hostages if the government turns down their demand to release 12 prisoners.

Zabul provincial council chief, Ata Mohammad Haqbin, said that kidnappers demand the release of 12 prisoners in exchange for the hostages they have.

On February 23, masked gunmen kidnapped 31 Shia Muslims from the Hazara ethnic community as they were traveling aboard two buses on the road between Kabul and the western city of Herat.

Afghan authorities found corpses of two of the abductees in Kakar (also known as Khak-e Afghan) district of the province, located over 400 kilometers (250 miles) south of the capital, Kabul, on April 6.

The Hazara community, which accounts for as much as 25 percent of Afghanistan’s population, is often targeted by militants in the country and neighboring Pakistan.
