Red Cross delivers second batch of relief aid to Yemen
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has delivered its second consignment of medical aid to Yemen as Saudi Arabia continues its deadly airstrikes against the impoverished country.
A plane carrying medical supplies landed in the Yemeni capital city of Sana’a on Saturday, ICRC spokeswoman Marie Claire Feghali said, adding, “The new cargo is 35.6 tones, of which 32 tones is medical aid and the rest water purifying equipment, electric power generators and tents.”
On Friday, the ICRC and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) managed to safely land two planes carrying 16 tons of medicine and equipment in Sana’a.
The deliveries were the first of their kind to reach the Yemeni capital since the start of the Saudi aerial campaign against the conflict-weary country last month.
On April 8, two boats carrying medical supplies and personnel arrived in the southern Yemeni port city of Aden.
Julien Harneis, a representative of UNICEF in Yemen, recently warned that the already high malnutrition levels in the Arab country are expected to sharply increase amid the violence.

Earlier this week, the UN called for an immediate “humanitarian pause” of at least a few hours each day in the conflict in Yemen to allow deliveries of urgently needed humanitarian aid to the country.
Saudi Arabia’s military aggression against Yemen started on March 26, without a UN mandate, in a bid to restore power to the fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.
Hundreds of people have so far been killed and thousands more wounded since the beginning of the Saudi airstrikes. Most victims of the raids are reported to be women and children.
