Lib Dem leader raps Chancellor Osborne over economy

Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg describes UK Chancellor George Osborne as “a very dangerous man” and believes his plans for the British economy will turn into a “disaster.”

Osborne has vowed to balance the books in the next Parliament if he stays on as chancellor. He has said he seeks to cut at least £12 billion from welfare and a further £13 billion from government budgets, but he has not outlined any significant raise in tax, putting himself on a collision course with the Liberal Democrats and Labour.

Clegg believes Osborne is acting in a “socially and morally unacceptable” way.

The Liberal Democrat leader has also promised to do “everything in his power” to stop chancellor George Osborne inflicting deep cuts in what he describes is a “massive lurch to the right.”

But many see Nick Clegg’s recent criticisms of his Tory coalition partners as opportunistic and cynical. Clegg has been scathing in his attacks on Tory plans for Britain in the next Parliament despite having spent five years at the center of a government slashing Britain’s spending and public services.

Clegg has been trying to position himself as the middle way alternative to Labour and the Tories. He claims that the Liberal Democrats are the party that will rein in Labour’s tax and spending plans in a coalition or provide a social heart to any future Tory led government.

Nick Clegg’s outburst follows a startling revelation made by chief secretary to the Treasury and close aide of Clegg, Danny Alexander. He claims that during budget discussions, senior Tory figures ordered him to look after the workers while they took care of the business bosses.

The Liberal Democrats have been lagging behind in opinion polls, as they seem to be paying a heavy price for getting into bed with the Tories in 2010. Many British people distrust Nick Clegg, particularly after several high profile u-turns, including breaking his promise not to increase tuition fees on the 2010 campaign trail.
