Iranian women allowed to attend indoor sport events: official

Iran’s Deputy Sports Minister for Culture, Education and Research Abdolhamid Ahmadi

Iranian officials have approved a proposal allowing women to attend indoor sport events, easing a long-time ban on the presence of female spectators in men's sports matches.

Abdolhamid Ahmadi, Iran’s deputy sports minister for culture, education and research, said Saturday that the plan has gained the needed approval from the national security officials, adding that the women and families will be able to attend the indoor sport events in the current Iranian calender year, which started on March 21.

Ahmadi said, however, that the easing of restrictions would not cover all events as some sports are mainly related to men and “the families are not interested in attending” them.

Since the victory of the Islamic revolution in 1979, Iranian women have had a greater presence in sport activities with female athletes now featuring in major sport teams in international events.
