Exploring the concept of social resistance in Islam

In recent years, we have seen how protests and increased political participation have collectively shaped events in the Middle East, in predominantly Muslim countries.

Massive peaceful street protests, in part mobilized through a series of globally-networked social media platforms, confirmed increased civic and political participation among a new generation of Muslim women and men in the Middle East.

Young Muslims in Western Europe find themselves experiencing economic marginalization, cultural exclusion and political dislocation, which have led to frustration and violence.

At the same time, young Muslims in the West often find themselves experiencing discrimination. As a result many have emerged in positive social engagement and alliances to challenge Islamophobia, cultural exclusion and marginalization.

In this edition of Islamic Awakening, we ask: How has Islam influenced nonviolent movements in recent times?
