France’s education minister has pledged to conduct an inquiry into a government scandal surrounding pedophile teachers in the European country.

“We have ordered an investigation to shed light on the shortcomings of our system and to correct its dysfunctions,” Najat Vallaud-Belkacem told French Television network BFM TV after leaving a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

The minister further described the problem of pedophile teachers as “intolerable” and promised to “tackle the issue head on.”

The scandal broke recently after reports emerged on how numerous teachers were employed at schools across France despite having previous convictions for pedophilia.

The proposed inquiry is expected to look at how French education authorities were not given information from the Ministry of Justice regarding the previous convictions of the suspected teachers.

Last month, the head teacher of a primary school in the town of Villefontaine, near the southeastern city of Lyon, confessed to having sexually abused blindfolded pupils during a workshop between December 2014 and March 2015.

The confession followed revelations that the suspect got his job despite a 2008 conviction for possessing child pornography material.

France is also among the countries hit by sex abuse scandals involving the Roman Catholic Church.
