The US State Department says American top negotiator in Iran nuclear talks, Secretary of State John Kerry, will stay in Switzerland until at least Thursday.

Citing “progress”, Marie Harf, the acting spokesperson for the State Department, made the announcement on Wednesday as Tehran and the P5+1, including the US, continued talks on Iran’s nuclear issue in the lakeside city of Lausanne.

"We continue to make progress, but have not reached a political understanding. Therefore, Secretary Kerry will remain in Lausanne until at least Thursday morning to continue the negotiations," Harf said.

The White House spokesperson Josh Earnest also spoke of “gaps” remaining to be resolved to reach an accord.

Iran and the P5+1 group – the US, Britan, Russia, France, China, ad Germany -- have missed a March 31 deadline to come to mutual understanding on whether they could continue the talks further.

Earlier, Abbas Araqchi, a senior Iranian negotiator, said any nuclear deal should certainly guarantee removal of all sanctions on Iran.

“The type and the entity by which the sanctions have been imposed are very variable, they must be distinguished, but we insist that in the first step of the agreement, all economic, financial, oil and banking sanctions must be lifted,” Araqchi said.
