Iran calls for UN action against aggression on Yemen
A senior Iranian official has called on the UN to take an immediate action against the Saudi-led war on Yemen, saying that the world body should use all it has in its capacity to end the aggression.
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, said Wednesday that if the Saudi-led military aggression against Yemen continues, it will have dangerous repercussions for all Middle Eastern states.
The Iranian diplomat made the remarks in a meeting with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the Third International Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria in Kuwait City.
Amir-Abdollahian expressed surprise at such “unilateral” decisions to launch aerial attacks against Yemen, emphasizing the UN’s role in preventing the eruption of an all-out war between the two Arab states.
“One should not allow that the continued attacks fan the flames of war and endanger the collective security of the region,” Amir-Abdollahian said, adding that the current military aggression against Yemen would bring about a new wave of terrorism and extremism in the Middle East and the world.
He also condemned the disruption of food and medical supplies to the impoverished people in Yemen as a result of the current aerial and naval siege on the Arabian Peninsula country.
On March 26, the Al Saud regime unleashed deadly air raids against Yemen. The attacks have claimed the lives of over 100 civilians so far.
Iran supports UN moves in Syria
Elsewhere in his comments, the Iranian officials also touched upon the issue of Syria, saying that the UN must also play a more active role in stopping the continued supply of weapons to terrorist groups in the Arab country.
He also reaffirmed the Islamic Republic’s support for a political solution to the four-year crisis in Syria.
The UN chief, in turn, appreciated Iran for playing a constructive role in the Middle East and called for Tehran’s increased help to the political process in the region.
Ban also underscored the UN’s role in helping the process of peace and stability in the region, saying that finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria and fighting terrorism tops the world body’s agenda in the Middle East.
