Iran-P5+1 hoping for success by end of deadline

The first ministerial plenary between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany was expected to be very decisive.

The Chinese Foreign Minister told reporters he hopes a deal can be achieved to help the people of Iran escape the burden of sanctions.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held talks with various officials before leaving Switzerland, saying he would be back the next day if necessary.

Sources say the US and Europe want UN Security Council sanctions to be reversible. They say that in case Iran violates the terms of a possible future agreement, the sanctions should be reversed automatically. Russia and apparently China disagree. Russia says such a move would be in violation of UN Security Council mechanisms.

Various sources have also denied reports that there’s been an agreement on sending Iran’s stockpile of uranium to Russia. Sources say the Iranian team would probably be open to the idea of turning its 8 tons of uranium into fuel inside the country or else diluting it.

The hope is that a common understanding can be achieved by the end of March but that would not mean an agreement. Once common solutions are found they would have to be written down in full detail.

It’s been called the endgame and with every move, the situation changes. Things appear to be very dynamic indeed.
