Iran rejects Arab League claims on Persian Gulf islands
Iran has categorically rejected “interfering” allegations made by the Arab League with regards to the three Iranian islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb.
“These islands are an inseparable part of the Iranian territory,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said on Monday.
She added that the repetition of interfering claims about Iran’s sovereignty on the three islands will never have any impact on the existing legal and historical realities.
Iran has carried out all measures within the framework of the Islamic Republic’s legal sovereignty over the three islands, she noted.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always given priority to the policy of friendship and good neighborliness with all neighboring countries based on non-interference in internal affairs and mutual respect,” Afkham pointed out.
She said Iran sets no limitation on the expansion of cordial relations with neighboring states and welcomes constructive interaction and broad cooperation with them.
Afkham’s remarks came in reaction to the final communiqué of the 26th Arab League summit in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, which raised unfounded allegations about the ownership of the three Iranian islands.
The islands of the Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa have always been part of Iran historically, proof of which can be found in and corroborated by countless historical, legal, and geographical documents in Iran and other parts of the world. However, the United Arab Emirates has repeatedly laid baseless claims to the islands.
