GOP says Obama should act militarily in Syria, Ukraine: US journalist

The Republican Party in the US Congress has portrayed the Democratic US President Barack Obama as “weak” in foreign policy.

The Republican Party in the US Congress has portrayed Democratic US President Barack Obama as “weak” in foreign policy for failing to use military actions against Syria and Ukraine, a political commentator in New York says.

“The Republicans are painting the Obama administration as being weak in foreign policy, pointing to both the failure to invade Syria and the failure to get militarily involved in Ukraine, among others,” said Don DeBar, who is also an anti-war activist and radio show host.

“This is a game that has [been] going on at least since the Cold War began in the post-World War 2 period and the Democrats have on occasion also accused Republicans of the same thing,” DeBar told Press TV on Sunday.

The political commentator also said the US government has failed in its foreign policy for its “obsession with empire” and not adapting to a new multipolar world in terms of international relations.

The US must “stop relying on military power and imperial, economic relations and political relations,” he argued.

DeBar made the comments after New Jersey Governor Chris Christie accused Obama of lacking leadership and common sense on foreign policy and said America has become weaker during his presidency.

Christie, a potential 2016 GOP presidential contender, said the US has become "defensive" and "weaker" under Obama, both at home and abroad.

"We need a leader in the White House once again who knows how to lead America and lead the world," he said.

Christie made the remarks on Saturday during a speech before some 800 of Michigan Republicans gathered at a local Republican Party annual fundraising dinner in suburban Detroit.

Should he launch a White House bid, Christie is likely to face several strong candidates, such as Senators Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker as well as Jeb Bush, the two-time Florida governor and the son and brother of former US presidents.
