Russia’s President Vladimir Putin says fighting extremism plaguing Arab countries is impossible without improving the regional situation in general.

In a message to the participants in a Saturday summit of the Arab League in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, Putin said, “We presume that it is impossible to efficiently combat terrorism without improving the regional situation in general.”

The photo shows Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi (C) giving a speech during the Arab League summit in Sharm el-Sheikh on March 28, 2015.

“The soonest possible settlement of the crisis situations in Syria, Libya, and Yemen based on international law principles through maintaining a broad dialogue and seeking nationwide accord seems very important in this context,” the message went on.

The comments came as Syria is experiencing its fifth year of snowballing militancy and extremism, and Libya is playing host to ravaging violence by rival militia groups.

In Yemen, Saudi Arabia has violated the country’s sovereignty through an aerial warfare. Riyadh waged the campaign in a bid to restore power to fugitive President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, a close ally of the Saudi regime. Nearly 40 civilians have so far been killed in the airstrikes.

The Russian head of state noted, “We support the Arab states’ striving for a happy future and favor the resolution of all problem facing them in a peaceful way, without interference from the outside.”

‘Palestinians should have their state’

Putin also used the message to convey Moscow’s support for an independent Palestinian state with East al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

“The resolution of the Palestine problem is of special significance, and its essential precondition is the realization of the Palestinian people’s legitimate right to establish an independent, viable, and territorially contiguous state with the capital in East Jerusalem.”
