Obama moving away from Israel in favor of relations with Iran: Sen.

US Republican Senator Bob Corker has said that President Barack Obama is trying to mend relations with Iran and move away from Israel.

“What the White House is doing — they're obviously moving away from Israel towards a relationship with Iran,” Corker told CNN on Friday.

“It's very apparent to me that what they're trying to achieve is a balance of power between the Shia sides and the more Sunni-oriented sides, and a way for them to extract themselves out of the Middle East,” he added.

The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was referring to nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and US Secretary of State John Kerry kicked off a fresh round of talks in the Swiss city of Lausanne on Thursday as part of broader talks between the Islamic Republic and the P5+1 countries aimed at clinching a final nuclear agreement.

This is while Washington-Tel Aviv relations have been strained during the past months.

President Obama refused to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he was in Washington earlier this month.

The Israeli leader was invited by House Speaker John Boehner to address Congress against a potential agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.

The invitation without consulting the White House angered the Obama administration.
