US nukes modernization violating NPT: Commentator

US Nukes

Press TV has conducted an interview with Brian Becker, a member of the Act Now to Stop War and End Racism (ANSWER) Coalition, from Washington, and Bob Ayers, a former US intelligence officer from Somerset, to discuss the United States’ double standards regarding production and maintenance of nuclear weapons.

Becker believes that the United States by renewing its nuclear arsenals is violating the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) which explicitly bans nuclear powers from modernizing their nuclear warheads and obligates them to gradually reduce their nukes.

The United States is pressuring Iran over its peaceful and highly-inspected nuclear program while at the same time it is busy testing intercontinental ballistic missiles and replacing old nuclear warheads with the fourth generation, Becker says, adding this truly reveals the US’ double standards regarding the proliferation issue.

Meanwhile, Ayers says there is just one standard for all countries around the world and that is to minimize the proliferation of nuclear weapons, which goes for every country, be it the United States or China.

The removal of all nuclear weapons cannot necessarily guarantee a better and safer world, he adds, noting that during the Cold War era the existence of nuclear weapons prevented the escalation of tensions through its deterrent effect.
