US considers ‘other steps’ for creation of Palestinian state

US ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro

The US ambassador to Israel says Washington is considering taking other steps to help creation of a Palestinian state as long as Benjamin Netanyahu serves as Prime Minister of Israel.

Dan Shapiro said if it is not possible to reach a peace deal with the Palestinians with Netanyahu in power, US considers “what other actions can be taken to continue in the ideal direction of attaining two states for two peoples.”

He, however, said the US has "not yet reached any decisions" about its new course.

Before he won March 17 election, Netanyahu said that if he was reelected to office, the Palestinians would not get the independent state they seek in the occupied West Bank, East al-Quds (Jerusalem) and Gaza.

Netanyahu’s rightwing Likud Party won 30 of the 120 seats in parliament, against 24 for rivals in the center-left Zionist Union.

In an interview with the Huffington Post published on Saturday, US President Barack Obama said "We take him at his word when he said that it wouldn't happen during his prime ministership.”

"That's why we've got to evaluate what other options are available, "Obama added.

The US also raised the prospect of removing critical diplomatic cover for the Zionist regime at the United Nations Security Council, threatening not to use its veto power to shield Israel from unfavorable resolutions.

“Steps that the United States has taken at the United Nations had been predicated on this idea that the two-state solution is the best outcome,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said last week.

Washington has so far helped to block Security Council resolutions condemning Israeli activities such as settlement building in the occupied West Bank.

According to Ralph Schoenman, the author of The Hidden History of Zionism, the underlying reality of Washington’s threat of not to use its veto power in favor of Israel is that the US is actually attempting to prevent a new Palestinian intifada.

Schoenman told Press TV that the United States is really afraid of a new inclusive Palestinian uprising and is trying its best to stop it by any means necessary.
