US students protest violent police arrest of black college man

Students rally at the University of Virginia on Friday, March 20.

A group of students have protested against aggressive police actions in the United States following the brutal arrest of a young black man from the University of Virginia.

More than 100 students chanted “black lives matter,” a slogan that erupted across the country after deaths of two African-American men by police in Ferguson and New York City last year.

The protesters gathered at the university on Friday and held a discussion about campus racial relations.

Black student representatives, Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy J. Longo and Brian Moran, the Virginia secretary of public safety and homeland security, were present at the meeting.

Martese Johnson was severely injured during an arrest by white police officers in Virginia on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old victim suffered facial injuries after he was arrested by special agents from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.

Johnson, a student at the University of Virginia, was arrested after an argument with a bouncer who refused him entry into a bar. He was charged with obstruction of justice, profane swearing and intoxication.

A graphic video has been posted on the Internet showing Johnson on the ground being arrested as his face is covered with blood.

“We felt the need to recognize the structural inequality within our University community that contributes to the continued discomfort that minority students face,” student council president Jalen Ross and student council president-elect Abraham Axler said. “But most importantly, we felt the need to stand with Martese as he begins to heal.”

Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe has ordered an investigation by state police over "the use of force in this matter."

UVA President Teresa A. Sullivan said in an email to the campus community that she had "deep concern about the incident."
