Britain is reportedly setting up a fund aimed at what has been referred to as shoring up Eastern European countries against the Russian influence amid rising tensions between Moscow and the West over the crisis in Ukraine.

The fund is being established by British Prime Minister David Cameron, according to Friday reports.

Christened “Good Governance Fund,” it is “aimed at strengthening democratic institutions in areas that are fearful of Russia’s influence,” Sky News reported.

London has been taking strong positions against Moscow, with British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond recently terming the country as the “greatest threat” to UK national security and warning that Russia’s modernization of its military capability is a “cause for concern” for Britain.

The fund, which would be valued at USD 30 million (EUR 28 million) in 2015 and 2016, is earmarked for Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Serbia.

Accusing Russia of involvement in violence in Ukraine, EU leaders have imposed economic sanctions on Moscow and recently agreed to extend the bans until the end of 2015. Moscow denies the allegations.

The violence has cost more than 6,000 lives. A shaky truce between pro-Russians and Kiev forces is in place in eastern Ukraine after a peace deal brokered in the Belarusian capital Minsk.
