Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says Moscow is determined to continue helping Iraq further upgrade its military capabilities, especially as it is battling the ISIL Takfiri militant group.

“We reaffirmed our firm resolve to further provide aid to Baghdad to strengthen its defensive capabilities in the face of this (terrorist) threat, ensure the unity and territorial integrity of this state and prevent foreign intervention in its internal affairs,” Lavrov told reporters following a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim al-Jaafari in Moscow on Thursday.

The top Russian diplomat further reiterated Moscow’s solidarity with Baghdad in the fight against terrorism.

Jaafari, for his part, praised Russia’s unwavering support for his country.

“I would like to thank you for supporting Iraq in many areas, including economy and politics. I would like to thank you for remarks made by senior Russian authorities in favor of Iraq. We highly appreciate such well-weighed remarks,” the Iraqi foreign minister said.

ISIL started its campaign of terror in Iraq in early June 2014. The heavily armed militants took control of Iraq’s northern city of Mosul before sweeping through parts of the country’s Sunni Arab heartland.

Iraqi soldiers, police units, Kurdish forces, Shia volunteers and Sunni tribesmen have succeeded in driving the ISIL terrorists out of some areas in Iraq.
