Iran nuclear deal to benefit region, Lebanon: Berri

Lebanon's parliament speaker Nabih Berri has expressed optimism about the prospect of talks between Iran and the P5+1 group over Tehran's nuclear program, saying that the agreement will benefit  the entire Middle East region, including Lebanon.

“An American-Iranian nuclear agreement, if reached, would have important repercussions on the region,” Berri said on Wednesday.

The Lebanese speaker further said that a comprehensive nuclear deal between Iran and the six world powers would contribute to the opening of a new chapter in relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

“One of the [outcomes] would be the reopening of channels between Tehran and Riyadh, which would have positive results on Lebanon,” he added.

Earlier on Monday, Prince Turki al-Faisal, Saudi Arabia's former intelligence chief, said Riyadh would seek the same right granted to Iran during negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program.

“I've always said whatever comes out of these talks, we will want the same,” he said in an interview with the BBC.

Iran and the P5+1 countries – Britain, France, China, Russia, and the United States plus Germany – are in talks to narrow their differences on outstanding issues related to Iran's nuclear energy program. The two sides have missed two deadlines since an interim deal was signed in November 2013. They have set July 1 as the next deadline for the talks.

The latest round of talks on Iran’s nuclear program kicked off in the Swiss city of Lausanne on Sunday with high-level talks between Iranian and American delegates.
