One killed, 5 injured in Phoenix suburb shooting spree; suspect arrested

Police officers talk to eyewitness at the scene of a shooting, March 18, 2015 in Mesa, Arizona.

A gunman has opened fire in at least four places in the US state of Arizona, killing one man and wounding at least five others, according to the police.

The shooting incident happened on Wednesday morning in the Phoenix suburb of Mesa, followed by a four-hour manhunt, with SWAT teams from law enforcement agencies in the area swarming the neighborhood.

The suspect was arrested after police officers spotted him on an apartment balcony and used a stun gun to subdue him.

Dozens of police officers later led a handcuffed man to a truck parked outside an apartment complex.

The police confirmed the arrest but did not immediately release the suspect’s identity.

According to Mesa police spokesman Esteban Flores, the gunman first opened fire inside a Mesa motel, where he killed one man and injured two women, and then he went to a nearby restaurant and shot and wounded an adult student there.

Two more people were injured at separate apartment complexes, including one during a home invasion.

"We don't know the motive. We know there was some type of argument at the first location, at the motel," Flores told reporters.

The Mesa police spokesman said a total of six people were shot, including one who succumbed to his injuries and another who was in critical condition.

Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the United States.

The US averages 87 gun deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.

About 4.5 million firearms are sold annually in the United States at a cost of 2 to 3 billion dollars.
