The two sons of former Egyptian dictator, Hosni Mubarak, have shown up in court on charges of financial corruption, their first appearance since their January release from custody.

The trial for Gamal and Alaa Mubarak, who also along with six other business partners and former government officials face charges of receiving a big illicit sum from the sale of the Egyptian National Bank, was held on Thursday but was adjourned again until April 16.

The pair already faces other legal proceedings for corruption charges leveled against them following the downfall of their father in Egypt’s popular revolution in February 2011.

The Mubarak brothers were earlier released on bail pending retrial in another corruption case in which they are charged with embezzling public funds for the renovation of presidential palaces and illegally using the funds to refurbish their private properties.

A large number of Mubarak-era officials have recently been cleared in retrials after being initially convicted.

In November last year, an appeals court cleared Mubarak and his Interior Minister Habib al-Adly of charges of killing peaceful protesters during the 2011 revolution.

The former dictator was also acquitted during the same trial of charges of exporting cheap gas to the Israeli regime.

Following the court order, Egyptians took to the streets to protest the ruling.

The export of Egypt's gas to Israel has always been a controversial issue in the North African country, which fought four wars with Israel before signing a peace treaty with the regime in 1979.

This is while many human rights activists and protest leaders in Egypt have been handed down lengthy prison terms for holding protest rallies over the past year.
