Russia raps Western media hype on UNSC Syria resolution

Russia has denounced as “biased” the Western media’s interpretations of the recent resolution passed by the UN Security Council (UNSC) on the use of chlorine gas in Syria, which has witnessed four years of foreign-backed Takfiri violence.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that the Western media have created a hype to show the Damascus government accountable for the use of chlorine gas in Syria, while the recent UNSC resolution merely censured chlorine gas attacks in the Arab country without apportioning blame on any side of the conflict.

“We would like to emphasize that neither resolution 2209, nor the decision of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Executive Council claim that any conflicting side in Syria is guilty of using toxic chemicals because there is no weighty proof of this,” read a statement issued by the ministry.

The statement added that other interpretations of the resolution’s “meaning and focus are biased and fail to comply with the real state of affairs.”

On March 6, 14 member states of the UNSC, including Russia, approved a resolution condemning the use of chlorine gas in the violence-ravaged country.

The statement further said Moscow voted in favor of Resolution 2209 particularly because it strongly condemns the use of toxic chemicals in general and anywhere in the world, adding that the resolution “gives a warning about the liability for such crimes to the international community.”

In February, the OPCW also voiced “serious concern… with a high degree of confidence that chlorine has been used repeatedly and systematically as a weapon in the Syrian Arab Republic.”

Syria’s reaction

Following the adoption of the resolution, the Syrian envoy to the UN lashed out at certain Western countries for their attempts to blame chlorine attacks on Damascus, saying it is the Takfiri terrorists who are behind such cruel assaults.

“The Syrian government has nothing to hide,” said Bashar Ja'afari (pictured above) after the UNSC meeting, adding, “These people [terrorists] are like hyenas. The more they kill, the more they are hungry.”

Source of conflict

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 210,000 people, according to reports. New figures show that over 76,000 people, including thousands of children, lost their lives in Syria last year.

Over 7.2 million Syrians have reportedly become internally displaced due to the ongoing crisis.

The Takfiri terrorist groups, with members from several Western countries, control swathes of land in Syria and Iraq, and have been carrying out horrific acts of violence such as public decapitations and crucifixions against all communities such as Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians.
