The United Nations has warned that the ravenous unrest in Iraq and Syria could end up consuming the fate of the countries’ young generation.

On Thursday, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Anthony Lake said the young generation in both countries was in danger of being lost to a cycle of violence.

The body said about 14 million children across the Middle East were suffering from the escalating conflict sweeping Syria and much of Iraq.

"For the youngest children, this crisis is all they have ever known," Lake said.

"For adolescents entering their formative years, violence and suffering have not only scarred their past; they are shaping their futures."

"With the conflict in Syria now entering its fifth year, the situation of more than 5.6 million children inside the country remains the most desperate," the UNICEF said.

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 210,000 people, according to reports. New figures show that over 76,000 people, including thousands of children, lost their lives in Syria last year.

Over 3.8 million Syrians have left their country since the beginning of the crisis. More than 7.2 million Syrians have also reportedly become internally displaced.

The ISIL terror group has overrun parts of the both countries and has been engaged in crimes against humanity in the areas under its control.
