Republican senators’ letter to Iran highly misleading: Biden
US Vice President Joe Biden has slated Republican senators for writing a warning letter to Iran describing it as “highly misleading” which was aimed at undermining President Barack Obama.
A group of 47 Republican senators wrote an open letter to Tehran on Monday, warning that the outcome of the nuclear talks would not be acceptable without Congress approval and could be revoked when Obama leaves the White House in 2017.
The letter “expressly designed to undercut a sitting president in the midst of sensitive international negotiations, is beneath the dignity of an institution I revere,” Biden said in a statement released by the White House Monday night.
“This letter sends a highly misleading signal to friend and foe alike that that our Commander-in-Chief cannot deliver on America’s commitments -- a message that is as false as it is dangerous," Biden said.
The vice president said he could not remember any other instance in which some Senators wrote a similar letter to show to another country that “the President does not have the constitutional authority to reach a meaningful understanding with them.”
Obama also blasted Republican senators for writing that letter saying they were undermining his administration’s efforts in nuclear negotiations with Iran.
The letter said a potential nuclear agreement with Iran would be a “mere executive agreement” that could be revoked “with the stroke of a pen and future Congresses could modify the terms of the agreement at any time.”
Iran and the P5+1 are holding negotiations to work out a final deal aimed at ending the longstanding standoff over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program.
