The Iranian national rugby sevens men’s team has beaten India to claim the championship of the second stage of the Asian qualifiers for 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Iran downed India’s powerful team 17-12 in the men's final at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, the capital city of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, on Monday.

India led the match 12-7 until halftime, but then succumbed to a combination of aggressive counter-attacks from the visiting team.

Iran defeated the United Arab Emirates, Laos, and Uzbekistan to reach the final.

Iranians also finished first in the previous round of the qualifiers, which was held in the UAE.

The victory put the Iranian squad through to the final stage of the qualifiers, scheduled to be held in Hong Kong in November. The tourney will determine which three teams can enter the 2016 Olympics.
