At least two people have been killed after their Airbus helicopter flew into a power line in western Japan, media and authorities say.

The French-built AS332L chopper crashed in a mountainous area in the Mie prefecture on Friday morning after leaving a hydropower plant for refueling at a regional heliport, a police spokesman said.

The helicopter hit a power line and crashed around 10:50 a.m. local time (0150 GMT), an official at the transport ministry confirmed.

Local media say two men on board the helicopter died in the crash. However, police have yet to verify the reports.

Authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the crash, the Japanese Transport Ministry added.

The incident marks the latest transportation accident in Japan. In February, three Japanese crewmembers died after a naval training helicopter crashed in Kagoshima prefecture in southwestern Japan.
