US warns against ISIL attempts to recruit youths online
The United States has issued an appeal, warning the authorities and people to remain vigilant about the ISIL terrorist group’s attempts to recruit young people through online means.
The appeal by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was issued on Thursday "to provide further information on the continuing trend of Western youth being inspired by ISIL to travel to Syria to participate in conflict."
"We remain concerned about the recruitment efforts made by ISIL particularly through social media engagement and we urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement," said a DHS official.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, “urged the public to report suspicious acts to the law enforcement agencies to have vigilance.”
Concerns over youths joining the ISIL grow in the US after the authorities arrested last week a Virginia student who FBI alleges helped another young man travel to Syria to join the Takfiri group.
FBI authorities who raided the teenager’s family home in Washington suburb in northern Virginia, allege that he helped a man not much older than himself make his way to Syria by online contacts with the terrorists.
US National Intelligence Director James Clapper said early this week that 180 Americans have tried to travel to Syria.
Over 20,000 foreign fighters from more than 90 countries are believed to have gone to the Arab country, according to the US and its allies.
The ISIL terrorists, who were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, have taken over large parts of Syria and neighboring Iraq.
They have been carrying out horrific acts of violence such as public decapitations and crucifixions against all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians.
