A court in Singapore has handed down a nine-month jail term and a light flogging sentence to two German nationals charged with vandalizing a train and trespassing.

“The offences are quite well planned and premeditated,” District Judge Liew Thiam Leng said, adding that transportation was disrupted as the vandalized train had to be taken out of service.

Andreas Von Knorre, 22, and Elton Hinz, 21, were sentenced on Thursday after being charged with breaking into one of Singapore’s train depots last November and spraying a carriage with paint.

The pair, who fled the country, were prosecuted internationally and arrested in neighboring Malaysia to be extradited to Singapore to face convictions.

Each pleaded guilty to one count of vandalism and two counts of trespassing. They expressed their remorse for what they called “a stupid mistake.”

Singapore holds strict laws on vandalism, and has caned and imprisoned foreigners, including a Swiss national in 2010 and a US teenager in 1994.

Singapore, a major global commercial hub, with the fourth-biggest financial center and one of the five busiest ports, is a modern city-state and island country in Southeast Asia.
