Republicans trying to embarrass Obama over Iran nuclear talks: Wilmer Leon

Leon says the Republicans are trying to embarrass Obama by undermining US nuclear talks with Iran.

American political analyst Dr. Wilmer Leon says the Republicans are trying to embarrass President Barack Obama by undermining US nuclear negotiations with Iran.

In an interview with Press TV on Wednesday, Leon strongly criticized Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for pushing a bill, known as Iran Nuclear Review Act, which would require congressional approval on a final nuclear agreement with Iran.

“While McConnell and others are trying to undermine the negotiating power of the American chief foreign diplomat, the president, they’re trying to embarrass the president on the world stage with the passage of this so-called Iran Nuclear Review Act,” he said.

“This is a clear demonstration of the hypocrisy of Mitch McConnell’s actions. He and his co-worker John Boehner in the House, they accuse the president of ignoring Congress and circumventing the legislative process with executive orders which by the way the president has the constitutional authority to implement,” he added.

On Tuesday, McConnell announced that Congress will vote next week on the legislation.

The White House has already warned that President Obama would veto the bill.

The analyst also noted that the subject of the legislation came on the heels of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Congress address.

“Netanyahu is flat out lying. He is lying. He says it has nothing to do with the politics. It has everything to do with the politics, especially Israeli politics,” Leon said, referring to Israel’s elections later this month.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is in the middle of nuclear talks with the P5+1 group -- the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany -- in order to reach a final agreement after an interim deal was reached in November 2013.
