Dozens have been killed in an explosion in Syria’s northwestern city of Aleppo and ensuing clashes between government forces and foreign-backed militants, a report says.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Wednesday that the blast hit a building housing the air force intelligence offices and was followed by clashes in the country’s second largest city.

"The explosion and the fighting caused dozens of deaths on both sides," the UK-based group said.

Aleppo once served as Syria’s industrial powerhouse, but it has been split between a government-held western part and a militant-held eastern portion since mid-2012.

Earlier this week, the foreign-sponsored opposition figures and militant forces in Syria rejected a proposal by the United Nations for the suspension of fighting in Aleppo.

Staffan de Mistura, the UN's special envoy to Syria, proposed last October an action plan for areas where Syrian forces are fighting Takfiri terrorists, and said the proposal includes “freeze zones” in Syria to permit deliveries of humanitarian aid, starting with Aleppo.

Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. The US and its regional allies -- especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey -- are supporting the militants operating inside the Arab country.

The violence, fueled by Takfiri groups, has so far claimed the lives of over 210,000 people, latest reports show.
